The history & Heritage

The Three Ships 10 Year Old Single Malt distilled in 2005 is the first to carry a vintage statement and follows the successful release of the single malts launched in 2003 and the collector’s tin series over a three year period in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The whisky & tasting

Master distiller Andy Watts says this is the most powerful single malt he has produced to date, a style he will be continuing in the single malts to come.

“When we launched South Africa’s first single malt in 2003 we didn’t have a single malt style policy in place and since then we have actively planned towards this moment where we are now in the position to launch a vintage statement single malt, each year and one with a defined style and vision.

“I use the Cape winter months for fermentation to allow the yeast to follow its natural fermentation curve with as little temperature control interference as possible. We distilled the spirit in 2005 in copper potstills before it was laid to rest for 10 years in a selection of older American oak to compliment the delicate flavours of the spirit. It’s a beautiful whisky and a very proud moment for me!”

TASTING NOTES:

You can pick up hints of cognac in the Original 10 Year Old Single malt. This can be because sherry and other oak casks was used in the fermentation process. The original 10 YO has a rich & dark golden colour with a smooth feeling over the tongue that leaves a linger sensation in your mouth. To get the best out of this Single malt, we suggest:

  • Serve the 10 YO Single malt slightly chilled
  • Add a touch of water to open the natural flavours even more

The food & venue

Charango Cape Town

Charango Facebook

The super sexy and trendy spot in Bree street, Cape town CBD was the venue for the #ThreeShips10YO launch.  Charango is a Peruvian inspired grill restaurant.

The exquisite interior of Charango is a testament to the creatives of the team from the murals by the talented Faith47, the on-trend exposed brick and honeycomb tiles to the ceramic tableware, that makes you feel like your back in NY city.

We were treated to a delightful tasting menu prepared by the talented Kieran Whyte. If you want to have an idea of which Peruvian-styled dished you can expect at Charango, feast your eyes on this…

What we enjoyed the most about the tasting menu and dishes is the fact that most dishes are meant to be shared. In true Peruvian-style, each dish was served on a big tray and you could plate for yourself.
